Social Committee, Barbecues and Turkey Dinners.
The Social Committee's goals this year were to help bolster the attendance on
race nights, to provide a social time for everyone, and to include family
activities at the clubhouse. Thus having a short meal ready at the clubhouse
before races would allow more time for sailors to arrive earlier.
After the meal while the sailors were out racing or sailing, others
would enjoy the view from the clubhouse, relax, and continue to socialize, even
playing some table games until the sailors returned.
The Social Committee has
been very enthusiastic and successful in achieving their goal. So much so, that the
meals were expanded by members bringing additional food items and
desserts, all in pot luck style. One would never know what tasty surprises were in
store from week to week. For the very last race the Social Meal became the Turkey
Dinner and was showcased complete with turkeys and pies. Actually it seemed more
like a banquet with so many varieties of fine food and everyone was so full
that it just wasn't the turkeys that were stuffed (grin).
The social meals worked out so well that the Executive would like to say
"Thank You" to the volunteers on the Social Committee (Kathryn and
Carole) for their time and
commitment in making it a success.
Earlier in the spring the Executive approved the purchase of a new barbecue
and some additional seed money to pre-purchase foods and supplies that
members would reimburse (example: $5.00 meals for hamburgers, hot dogs, or
sausages, all with buns) for quick social meals on race nights.
In the fall the social committee proposed to the Executive (accepted and
approved) that a stove be added to the food serving area to better help and
expand the social meals. Since it has been discovered that behind the fridge is
a pre-wired stove outlet, a donated stove has been offered and will be installed
with the fridge being moved to a different location.
